Play Chainagram

Chainagram is a daily word puzzle developed by Paul Ratcliffe that tests your logic and anagram skills. Similar to a word ladder, the aim of this word game is to make a chain linking two words together by changing one letter at each step of the chain. But there's a twist – you have to make anagrams as you go.

Can you work out which letter to change at each link to form a chain of anagrams that links the words and solves the puzzle?

Disputing

OK, we admit it, not every word is in the dictionary that we use to check if your word is valid or not and that can be frustrating. As you seem like a trustworthy individual, if you confirm that is definitely a real word and is definitely spelt correctly then we will accept it.

How to play

Connect two words by filling in the missing links in the chain. At each step of the chain you need to:

Swap an E in SLEEP for an A, make an anagram and you have LAPSE. Swap the S for a P and you have an anagram of APPLE.

How to:

Shuffle letters

Hey, you've found the shuffle button! As you've not clicked on this button before I thought I'd tell you what it does.

Shuffle is only available when you have entered more than 1 and fewer than 5 letters (excepting the ? character). Here's a reminder of how it works.

The shuffle button      shuffles the letters that you have entered for that link in the chain. This is a great way to help solve an anagram as it makes it easier to visualise which words might fit into that particular link. Shuffling is only available when:

Example: you know the link word you are looking for contains the letters L,E and P. Enter LEP??, hit shuffle and you might see ?P?LE prompting you to think of APPLE.

How to:

Insert common letters

Hey, you've found the insert common letters button! As you've not clicked on this button before I thought I'd tell you what it does.

For each link in a chainagram chain you need to think of a word that has one letter different from the step before it. As you also know the last word in the chain that means that you usually know at least one letter that has to be in the word that you are trying to find (and if you've already completed some of the links you might know more). The insert common letters button inserts the known letters for you so you do not have to work them out yourself. It's especially helpful when you are learning to play the game, use it in combination with the shuffle letters button for best effect.

Example: you are trying to find the single link between SLEEP and APPLE. Using the insert common letters button inserts the L,E and P for you, along with two question mark characters, like this: LEP?? – ready to shuffle!

How to:

Difficulty

The difficulty of each puzzle is ranked out of 5. A puzzle that is ranked 1/5 is relatively easy, a puzzle that is ranked 5/5 is relatively difficult.

difficulty N/A: difficulty ratings are determined based on realtime, anonymous data showing how many attempts a person takes on average to solve that puzzle. We need at least 5 datapoints to determine this so if you are one of the first people to play a puzzle it will not yet have a difficulty rating. Difficulty ratings are also likely to change throughout the day as more data is collected.
